“Since the state has broken the rules of its own game, people don’t trust each other any more.”, descibes lawyer and notary Marta Bodo (Buenos Aires) her experience of the economic collapse in Argentina in 2001.
The video installation FACADES OF CRISIS: OUTSIDE/IN explores the consistency and relevance of architectural safety measurements that have boomed in Buenos Aires since the economical collapse in 2001. In 2001 the state had to declare its bankruptcy after being unable to pay back its international depths, which had accumulated during the 1990ies under an extreme course of privatization and market deregulation. Thousands of people lost their savings, perspectives and identity practically overnight without any governmental protection. Consequently the experience of precariousness has shaped biographies, architecture and daily life significantly. Today in Buenos Aires belongings are protected and individual possessions are tried to be preserved again: "Lo tuyo es tuyo – what is yours, stays yours", is stated on a poster behind a metal grid. Metal curtains and iron bars enclose windows, doors, kiosks, shops and even billboards.

“There is no outside of the crisis.“, states the philosopher Nancy Fraser. FACADES OF CRISIS explores as video installation room the texture and consistency of architectural safety measurements that have boomed in Buenos Aires since the economical collapse in 2001. The rigidity of the metal constructions is confronted with the fragility of life and subjective perception of ten inhabitants of the city of Buenos Aires.
